I am a Bostonian who recently visited Key West for a vacation. As one of many tourists and locals walking up and down Duval street (the main drag in Key West) I observed many unique stores, restaurants and bars. But I was completely unprepared to find an Upper Crust Pizzeria. Before going further, its worth noting that I regularly eats at various Upper Crusts in and around Boston.
When I saw the Upper Crust on Duval I had no choice but to go in and check it out. For several days I had eaten fish and key lime pie and I was ready for some good old pizza and that's exactly what I got. The pizza was every bit as good as the product they serve in Boston as was the decor inside.
What was surprising was that the clientele in KeyWest was not tourists, it was packed with locals which I found to be a nice change of pace. It also makes sense, the food at Upper Crust is great so the locals have every reason to go. Most tourists have never heard of Upper Crust and therefore have no need to eat pizza on Duval.
I for one was grateful, especially while hungry a couple hours before dinner. While I have no idea why Upper Crust has a Key West location, I am sure am glad they are there it made my day. The pizza is just great and it was nice to meet a few locals.
