The Pine Tavern is generally offered as one of the better eateries in Bend. Its usually pretty crowded, but the full menu is available in the bar, and there are a number of tables, so you can enjoy a reasonably civilized meal without advanced reservations. Instead of bread, they serve warm lemon "scones", although the fluffy light texture isn't very scone-like. Add some honey butter, and they're weirdly evocative of sopapillas in both taste and smell. The salad was average. At least it was spring greens instead of the usual iceberg travesty. As for the main course - go with some kind of steak. The New York strip I had was awesome. They pride themselves on serving locally ranched grass feed beef, and the results are fabulous. The steak alone makes this a must visit if you're dining out in downtown Bend.
As I mentioned it's pretty crowded, and the service in the bar is marginal to average, but the quality of the New York strip erased all memory of previous quibbles:).
