By way of background I have been playing hockey for over 30 years and have resided and played hockey in 3 different states. In that time, I visited a lot of hockey shops and like Breakaway Hockey a good deal.
The staff at Breakaway is knowledgeable and there are plenty of people on hand to service customers. The equipment selection is quite good as this shop supports all major brands. The shop also does a nice job stocking both value priced equipment and top of the line gear. That said, do not go to Breakaway to find low-end gear found at national chain sporting good stores.
As for pricing, the shop is average. There are more expensive stores out there and some items can be found cheaper on the Internet. That said, I really like the personal service at Breakaway which is more than worth a couple extra dollars I might save shopping on-line.
Speaking of service, Breakaway does a very good job with skate sharpening and does all the little things like cutting hockey sticks, adjusting helmets and and replacing two-piece stick blades.
I have found only two downsides to the shop. First, in order to keep prices low and staff plentiful, they do tend to hire high-school aged students and while mature, their still young. Next their supply of two-piece stick blades is low and I frequently can't find a blade suiting my needs.
Above said, hockey players in Needham are lucky to have a good shop like Breakaway near by.
