2nd Street Cafe is a great lunch spot. Those of us that work in Cambridge are really lucky to have so many amazing lunch options and 2nd Street is at the top of that list.
I originally stumbled into 2nd Street while taking a walk through a residential neighborhood located between the Cambridge Side Galleria Mall and Kendall Square. I was immediately struck by the crowd trying to get into what looked like a residential building. I'm glad I took a look inside to find this cafe gem.
2nd Street's owner John was an ex-chef at Radius, One of Boston's most famous restaurants. While he went for a much more low-key establishment with 2nd Street Cafe, the food is of the same caliber.
The base menu is driven by sandwiches, salads and soups. While all their fresh made to order sandwiches are great, try the Cubano. They use a spicy relish to give this sandwich a flavorful kick.
As much as I enjoy the sandwiches, the specials are where its at. Each day 2nd street features 3 entrees for $8.95. These specials are a bargain. For example today's specials were:
* Tilapia with Basmati Rice and Lemon Caper Sauce
* Roast Chicken with Creamy Polenta
* Penne with Sundried Tomatoes, Spinach, Chicken, Wine, and
Cream
The quality of these specials far exceeds what you would typically expect to find at a lunch spot. Special are conveniently updated daily at www.2ndstcafe.com.
Everyone at 2nd Street is extremely friendly. They will remember your name after just a few trips. I have eaten at 2nd Street dozens of times and have never been less than thrilled with my meals.
